Pyrgos Village

What makes Pyrgos unique is that it is the tallest community on the entire island, offering fabulous panoramic views of both sides of the island. It is located on the west coast, about 7.5 kilometers southeast of the city of Fira. You can watch the green valleys, the vast sea, and the whole island unfolding beneath your feet. Pyrgos remains a traditional village, according to the architecture of the Cyclades. Its narrow and winding paths and stone houses make it delightful.

The village of Pyrgos has the most blue-domed churches and vineyards. Find small galleries and shops hidden in hidden corners, as you go around the successive alleys, up and down. At the bottom of the village, there are several tourist shops, mini markets, welcoming restaurants, and taverns with delicious food and cafés, most around the main square.

As you climb this village, you will reach the Venetian Castles, one of the five castles in Santorini, where the view is unimaginable. It is built amphitheater with three churches around it. To the west is the church of Theotoki or Koimisis in Teotokou, which is believed to be one of the oldest churches on the island. The Eisodion Church of Theotokou is located at the highest level in Kasteli, and the Agia Theodosia Church is very close to its entrance.

Many churches and chapels in Pyrgos can be visited, but the Profits Ilias monastery, near the village, is worth mentioning. Inside the chapel of Agia Triada (a Profitis Ilias) is the museum “Collection of icons and relics” of Pyrgos, an important collection of ecclesiastical objects, books, and numerous works of art.

In addition, in Pyrgos you can meet some remarkable wineries, where you can visit the vineyards, learn about the history and production of the famous Santorini wine and, mainly, you can taste the surprisingly sweet wine.
