Akrotiri Lighthouse

Akrotiri Lighthouse

Lighthouse in Santorini

In the charming and suit village of Akrotiri, you can find the well-known lighthouse on the edge of the southwestern part of the island, just 15 kilometers away from the town of Fira. It is considered one of the best and most amazing lighthouses in the Cyclades. It is an old building, with whitewashed walls, stand on the edge of a cliff just above the Aegean Sea. Likewise, it is certainly an idyllic setting.

The Akrotiri lighthouse, built by a French company in 1892, is one of the first lighthouses in Greece. It ceased operations during World War II, but began again in 1945, with a reconstruction of the Greek navy. Initially, it was refueled with gasoline until 1988, when it became automatic. The tower above the lighthouse keeper’s house is 10 meters high and exits a bright white light.

The lighthouse is located in a quiet place, surrounded by the sea, ideal for happy and romantic moments. It is recommended to visit at sunset when sunlight sinks and floods the lighthouse. It is a great place to watch the sunset and the fact that it is not usually held makes it more special. Furthermore, it is the place that the locals prefer to spend their evenings and appreciate this magical moment.

There is no public access inside the building, but you can enjoy it, along with a fascinating view, sitting on the outer wall or on the rocks by the sea. The lighthouse is easily accessible on the road in the village of Akrotiri, and the route suggests magnificent images. Worth a visit, as the view you can see is pure magic.
